Soniia Cheah has resigned from her position as Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) sports director, ending her tenure less than four months after being appointed to the newly created role.
The former national women's singles player was named KLBA's first-ever sports director in February, with responsibilities that included overseeing player development, strengthening sports management, monitoring clubs and independent players, and exploring international collaborations.
Her departure comes as a surprise given the high expectations surrounding her appointment. KLBA had viewed Soniia as an important part of its long-term development plans, believing her experience as a former Olympian and national No. 1 could help drive the association's growth both on and off the court.
During her introduction earlier this year, KLBA president Datuk Seri Dr Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos described Soniia as a motivated and independent individual capable of bringing fresh ideas to the association. Her appointment was also part of KLBA's broader effort to provide leadership opportunities to former players and strengthen its development structure.
While details surrounding her resignation remain limited, the move leaves KLBA searching for a replacement as it continues to push forward with several grassroots and high-performance initiatives.
Soniia retired from professional badminton in 2022 after a career that saw her reach a career-high world ranking of No. 23 and represent Malaysia at the Tokyo Olympics. Since leaving the international circuit, she has remained involved in the sport through coaching and youth development.
Her brief spell as sports director may have come to an early end, but Soniia remains one of Malaysian badminton's most respected former players. Attention will now turn to her next move and how KLBA plans to fill the vacancy as it continues its development efforts.
