MotoGP took a significant step toward its next generation on Monday as manufacturers and riders completed the first major test of the 2027 regulations at Brno.
The session marked the first opportunity for contracted race riders to evaluate the upcoming technical package, which will introduce smaller 850cc engines, Pirelli tyres, reduced aerodynamic elements and the removal of ride-height devices. The changes are designed to place greater emphasis on rider skill while improving competition on track.
Held immediately after the Czech Grand Prix, the test provided teams with valuable early data under competitive circuit conditions. Although ambient temperatures were slightly lower than on race day, the riders still faced demanding conditions throughout the session.
Early indications suggest Aprilia adapted well to the new package. According to reports from the paddock, the Italian manufacturer recorded the fastest laps of the test, with a best time of 1min 54.0sec.
While the pace was encouraging, it also highlighted the performance gap between the current and future machinery. The benchmark time was around nine-tenths slower than the fastest race lap set during the Czech Grand Prix and nearly three seconds adrift of the weekend's pole position.
One of the few incidents during the test involved Marc Marquez. The eight-time world champion suffered a minor crash but escaped uninjured, allowing him to continue his evaluation programme without concern.
Attention was also focused on Pirelli, which will become MotoGP's exclusive tyre supplier under the new regulations. The manufacturer expressed satisfaction with the opening test, describing the feedback from teams and riders as positive and highlighting the collaborative approach taken throughout the day.
Although the 2027 season remains some distance away, the Brno test offered the clearest indication yet of MotoGP's future direction. With manufacturers already gathering crucial information and adapting to a dramatically different technical package, development work is now expected to accelerate over the coming months.
