Jorge Martin's impressive recovery at Mugello has reignited the MotoGP title battle, with the reigning champion now just 17 points behind Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi. As Aprilia emerges as the dominant force in 2026, an intriguing championship showdown is taking shape within the factory garage.

Jorge Martin believes his MotoGP title challenge remains firmly on track despite Marco Bezzecchi's dominant start to the 2026 season, as the Aprilia teammates continue to emerge as the leading contenders for the championship.

After enduring a disastrous Catalan Grand Prix where six crashes across the weekend left him empty-handed, Martin responded in style at Mugello. The reigning world champion secured second place in both the sprint race and the Grand Prix, collecting valuable points and reducing the damage in the standings.

While Martin rebuilt momentum, Bezzecchi further strengthened his title credentials. The Italian delivered another commanding performance at his home circuit, claiming victory and leading Aprilia to its first-ever MotoGP one-two finish on Italian soil.

Despite Bezzecchi's impressive tally of four wins from the opening seven rounds, Martin remains within striking distance. The Spaniard trails by only 17 points, keeping the championship battle wide open with plenty of races still to come.

The situation has drawn comparisons to Martin's successful 2024 title-winning campaign against Francesco Bagnaia. During that season, Martin gradually built momentum before making his decisive move later in the year.

Bagnaia recently suggested Martin may be following a similar approach.

"He is deploying the same strategy as in 2024," Bagnaia said, describing Martin as a clear championship favourite.

Martin acknowledged the similarities but stressed that competing against Bezzecchi presents a different challenge.

"It is different because Marco is another rider, but the situation is very similar," said Martin.

One key difference is that both riders now share the same garage. While that creates an unusual dynamic, Martin insists their relationship remains positive despite the growing title battle.

"We have a good relationship, which is important," he explained. "We help each other improve and beat the rest, then we fight among ourselves."

The partnership has helped elevate Aprilia's performance this season, with both riders consistently battling at the front of the field.

Although many are already discussing the championship, Martin is determined to keep his focus on preparation rather than points calculations.

"I am always going to fight for the title, but thinking about it right now contributes absolutely nothing," he said.

Instead, the Spaniard prefers to concentrate on training and daily improvement, believing that consistent work will ultimately determine whether he can successfully defend his crown.

Martin is also confident that Aprilia now possesses a bike capable of performing at every circuit on the calendar.

"I think the bike will allow us to be competitive everywhere," he said. "But in this sport, the moment you lose focus, the rest will eat you alive."

Despite finishing behind Bezzecchi at Mugello, Martin was able to appreciate the significance of his teammate's victory. Racing in front of a passionate home crowd, Bezzecchi received a memorable reception from Italian fans after securing the win.

"I'm happy for Marco," Martin said. "The podium was impressive. Seeing the emotion of the moment and hearing the Italian anthem was very beautiful. For him, it will be unforgettable."

Martin also admitted that Bezzecchi is pushing him harder than any teammate he has previously had, a challenge he believes is making him a stronger rider.

With only 17 points separating the two Aprilia stars, the battle for the 2026 MotoGP crown is increasingly shaping up as an internal duel that could define the season.
